Zusammenfassung

Die realistische Anbaufläche für Heil- und Gewürzpflanzen liegt in Deutschland bei mehr als 8000ha und unterliegt einer ständigen Zunahme. Dennoch wird der überwiegende Teil der Rohware importiert. Dafür sind vor allem klimatische Bedingungen sowie das niedrige ausländische Preisniveau verantwortlich. Viele Firmen haben aber inzwischen die Vorteile eines standortnahen Vertragsanbaues erkannt. Gefördert wird die positive Entwicklung durch Kooperation in verschiedenen Bereichen. Nach wie vor gibt es viele Probleme, zum Beispiel bei der Unkrautunterdrückung oder der Anbau- und Erntetechnik. Daraus resultiert ein höherer Arbeitsaufwand sowie stark schwankende Deckungsbeiträge. Hilfestellung versuchen die wenigen öffentlichen Forschungsinstitutionen zu geben, deren Ergebnisse allen offenstehen. Es ist davon auszugehen, daß sich die positive Entwicklung in Deutschland fortsetzen wird, wenn bestimmte Voraussetzungen erfüllt werden.

Situation and Future Perspectives of the Field Cultivation of Medicinal and Spice Plants in Germany 

 Summary

The actual cultivated area for medicinal and spice plants in Germany is estimated at about 8000ha. Although the area under cultivation is continuously increasing, the largest proportion of plant drugs is still catered for by imports. Favourable climatic conditions and low price levels of foreign countries are the most important reasons for this higher imports. Nonetheless, many firms have now realized the advantages of supporting contract cultivation within Germany. This positive development is supported by cooperation in different fields. However, there are many problems yet to be solved, among them; weed control or the development of suitable cultivation and harvesting technology. Against this background, the resultant problems of higher labour input and strongly flactuating gross margins need addressing. Support, where applicable, is offered by the few public research institutions whose products are available to any member of the public. It seems plausible that the positive development of medicinal and spice plant cultivation in Germany will continue upon the fulfillment of certain prerequisites.
